Samsung’s One UI 8 Update Timeline and Key Features
Samsung has rolled out the latest version of its custom software, One UI 8, based on Android 16. This update was first introduced with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, and Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. Unlike previous releases, Samsung has accelerated the process, allowing users to access the beta version for several devices ahead of the official stable release.
One UI 8 is expected to be available for a wide range of Galaxy devices soon. Following the initial beta launch for the Galaxy S25 series in May, the brand has expanded the program to include more models. Starting next week, Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Flip 6, and Galaxy Z Fold 6 users will have the opportunity to test the beta version. In September, additional devices such as the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and various Galaxy A-series models will also join the beta program.
Once the beta is released to these eligible devices, Samsung will begin the stable rollout, likely starting with the Galaxy S25 series in late September. The company typically prioritizes its flagship Galaxy S and Z series models, followed by mid-range Galaxy A-series devices, before gradually expanding to other models. Samsung aims to ensure all eligible devices receive the One UI 8 update by the end of the year.
The faster rollout of One UI 8 is attributed to the adoption of Google’s trunk-based development approach. This method allowed Google to develop Android 16 more efficiently, resulting in an earlier release. Samsung has also benefited from this approach, enabling it to roll out One UI 8 quicker than previous versions. This shift in development strategy may influence how major software updates are released in the future.
According to recent reports, Samsung plans to introduce major One UI software updates alongside its new Galaxy Z series foldable phones in the middle of the year. Meanwhile, the upcoming Galaxy S26 series is expected to launch with One UI 8.5 in early 2026. This marks a change in how Samsung introduces new software features, aligning them more closely with the release of new hardware.
What’s New in One UI 8?
While One UI 8 doesn’t bring major overhauls like One UI 7, it includes several useful improvements and additions. Here are some key highlights:
Enhanced Productivity and Multitasking
One UI 8 introduces a dedicated full-screen layout for Quick Share. Tapping the icon in the Quick Settings panel triggers the “Ready to receive” action, while a “Send” tab allows users to send files without switching apps. The split screen feature has been improved, allowing users to stretch one app to take up more space on the screen. Samsung Dex also receives upgrades, including the ability to adjust screen resolution and tweak display rotation.
Personalization and Automation
New dynamic live wallpapers that change colors based on the time of day are now available. These wallpapers transition from bright and colorful during the day to darker themes at night. The update also expands on the routines introduced in One UI 7, adding features like Cold weather alerts, Morning briefings, and Umbrella reminders. Customizing Profile Cards has also become easier, with a full layout view during edits.
Redesigned and Smarter Apps
Several apps have been redesigned for better usability and aesthetics. The Gallery app automatically sorts screenshots into categories like Boarding passes, Coupons, and Shopping. The My Files app now lets users filter files by the app they were downloaded from, while the Weather app features smoother animations and hyper-realistic backgrounds.
The Reminder app gets a modern look with prominent category displays and suggestions as users type. The Calendar app features a cleaner design, deeper black backgrounds, and integration with the Reminders app for easier task management.
Privacy and Accessibility
The Secure Folder now allows users to assign different fingerprints for access and hide other apps within it. Users can also completely hide the Secure Folder to prevent notifications or app suggestions. Accessibility features include screen zoom buttons, keyboard control for mouse actions, and direct pairing of Bluetooth hearing aids.
Other Notable Improvements
The Camera app now lets users customize swipe actions for camera controls. Connecting multiple Bluetooth audio devices is easier with QR code scanning. Users can manage alarms in groups from a Home screen widget and add existing alarms to groups. The Samsung Health app allows users to challenge friends to fitness goals and reminds them to maintain good habits.
