Meta Unveils Revamped Social Apps for Mixed Reality

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company has rebuilt its social apps for mixed reality, bringing a new level of immersion to Facebook, Instagram, and Reels.

The announcement comes as Meta continues to invest heavily in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. In June, Zuckerberg revealed that the company was testing a way for users to watch Reels on its Quest headsets.

The redesigned social apps are designed to be more intuitive and immersive when used in VR. For example, users can now watch Reels in a virtual cinema or share photos and videos with friends in a virtual living room.

Meta is also working to tie its different apps and systems together. By redesigning its social network VR apps to be better on Quest, Meta is making it easier for users to switch between different experiences.

The company also announced it has rebuilt Meta Horizon OS for spatial computing, bringing better support for 2D apps like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Additionally, Meta has added dynamic spatial audio for panels, which are the rectangular surfaces that display 2D app content in Quest.

These updates are a significant step forward for Meta's mixed reality ambitions. By making its social apps more immersive and interconnected, Meta is making it easier for users to connect with friends and family, share experiences, and explore the world around them in new ways.
