Fisher & Paykel, the appliance brand based in Auckland, New Zealand, has significantly expanded and renovated its flagship experience center in New York City. Located within the Architects & Designers Building, the showroom has grown from 4,600 to 6,400 square feet, offering a reimagined space designed in collaboration with Schiller Projects, a local architecture studio.
According to Xanthe Whiteley, the Senior Brand Experience Designer at Fisher & Paykel, the renovated space embodies the brand’s ethos of “luxury design inspired by nature.” The showroom explores kitchen design by uniting appliance technology and performance with elemental materials and an understanding of modern living.
The design pays homage to the surrounding urban environment of New York City. The entrance features flooring tiles reminiscent of the city’s historic bluestone sidewalks, while a limestone-clad wall references a material frequently used in New York architecture. American oak flooring, sustainably sourced, evokes the old oak-plank water towers atop surrounding buildings. The textured ceiling subtly nods to the city’s iconic grid. Lighting is provided by Stickbulb, a Long Island City-based brand, which designed all the pendant lights.
The showroom is organized around three distinct kitchen vignettes:
Minimalist Kitchen: This kitchen, fabricated with millwork by Edgewood Made, combines dark-stained walnut cabinetry and gray granite countertops with appliances that sit flush with the surfaces, seamlessly integrating into the cabinetry.
Contemporary Kitchen: Designed in partnership with Arclinea, this kitchen features a 16-foot-long island that anchors the oak cabinetry. It also showcases Fisher & Paykel’s Column refrigeration solutions and new modular cooktops built into the stainless-steel countertop.
Professional Kitchen: Created with Henrybuilt, this vignette showcases walnut millwork, beige marble counters, and more durable appliances, catering to avid home cooks and entertainers.
These environments illustrate Fisher & Paykel’s approach to designing appliances that integrate with the architecture of the home and function as an intelligent ecosystem.
In addition to the main installations, the showroom features smaller spaces created in partnership with Space Theory, Henrybuilt’s modular sister brand. These include two compact kitchens displaying the brand’s finishes on a smaller scale, suited for tighter city residences. A designated Social Kitchen area hosts events, including immersive gatherings and culinary experiences led by in-house chefs who demonstrate the capabilities of the appliances. Furniture maker Christian Woo designed the dining table, while Kastella, a Canadian furniture maker, crafted the chairs and stools in this section.
These events provide a deeper understanding of how a connected kitchen ecosystem supports optimal results—keeping food fresher, storing wine properly, and transforming ingredients into cuisine—informing a kitchen design that aligns with individual lifestyles.
